Almond Milk Might Be Better For Cows But It Is Not Good For The Bees Or The Planet
SEASON 4 – EPISODE 8 – Almond Milk Might Be Better For Cows But It Is Not Good For The Bees Or The Planet
It takes 371 litres of water to produce just 1 litre of almond milk, although this does compare very favourably with dairy milk that requires 628 litres of water to produce 1 litre of cows milk.
Almonds are entirely dependent on honey bee pollination, without honey bees, there would be no almonds. More than 80 percent of the world’s almonds are produced in California, requiring more than a million colonies of honey bees, of which because of the pesticides used on the almonds, one third of the hives will perish and die.
